About Us

The Experiment in International Living (EIL), founded in 1932, was one of the first organizations of its kind to engage individuals in intercultural living and learning. Originating in the United States, The Experiment introduced the homestay concept to the world by carefully preparing and placing gExperimentersh in the homes of host families to study other languages and cultures firsthand.

Over the years, Federation EIL National Representations have been established in many countries around the globe and new programs have been added along the way. Nevertheless the original concept has remained steadfast: enabling individuals of all ages to share experiences, languages, and customs with those from different traditions, with the goals of broadening horizons, gaining lifelong friends, and advancing peace.

Today the portfolio of programs encompass educational group travel, study abroad, language training, work exchange, and other cultural immersion programs.

Federation EIL is the worldwide network of The Experiment in International Living. It began in 1954 when Experiment national offices around the globe banded together to form a Swiss-registered association to facilitate their common educational exchange programs. Federation EIL members are privately run, nonprofit, nonpolitical, and nonreligious organizations. Each has met the standards for acceptance into Federation EIL.

By coming together as Federation EIL, these organizations have developed and continue to maintain high standards of quality in programs they conduct.

Federation EIL has held consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as a nongovernmental organization in Category II since 1978, and with The Council of Europe since 1981. In 1989 it was recognized as a Peace Messenger organization by the United Nations Secretary General. It is in partnership with UNESCO in celebration of the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Nonviolence (2001-2010). Four of its programs in 2000 and two more in 2001 were designated by UNESCO as Flagship Events in marking this Decade.
